Macambo (Theobroma bicolor) is the most recent superstar to shine in the Superfood spotlight. It may be new to the Superfood scene, but has been touted for its brain-boosting, mood-lifting properties for thousands of years. This lesser known, but just as amazing Amazon Superfood provides incredible health benefits like its cousin the cacao bean (Theobroma cacao).
The Macambo nut grows on a tall canopy tree in the South American Rainforest. Macambo trees are much rarer than cacao trees as the species has not yet been propagated commercially to any significant extent. When compared to the price of raw cacao, it is far more expensive. But is it worth it? More and more people and companies in the Superfoods business think so based on comparing flavour and nutrient content, although the ORAC (Oxidant Radical Absorbance Capacity) is lower than that of cacao.
Macambo nuts (also called beans and seeds) are lightly roasted for texture, depth and a hint of smokiness. They can be consumed as a healthy snack while also enjoying its wonderful benefits. Delicious, buttery and crunchy with a flavour similar to raw cacao are some of the ways that the Macambo nut/bean has been described.

Amazing health benefits of Macambo toasted nuts/beans:
Stimulates Brain Function. This brain-shaped nut provides powerful fuel for the brain. Mesoamerican cultures and Amazon shaman healers have traditionally used it to treat brain disorders, giving it the nickname “Brain Bean”. It is loaded with nourishing compounds, essential fatty acids and important nutrients that can stimulate brain function and protect the brain from common degenerative disorders like dementia.
Energizing Effect. As Macambo shares its genus with cacao it contains theobromine; an alkaloid that stimulates the body and increases alertness. The effects of theobromine are similar to caffeine but because it does not affect the central nervous system, one never get “the jitters” or “the crash.” Its effects are milder and last longer than caffeine.
Protein Packed. An amazing 25% of each nut is pure protein, which is extremely high compared to other seeds and nuts. Almonds are 13% protein and walnuts are only 8%. Its high protein aid in creating new cells and repairing muscle. Macambo is a great snack post-workout, pre-expedition or just anytime for an energy boost.
Full of Fiber/Improves Digestion. With almost 9 grams of fiber in 1 ounce - 28 grams- of Macambo, these nuts have a super high dietary fiber content. By comparison, black beans have just 2 grams and lentils only slightly more. Fiber is important because it promotes bowel movements and helps remove toxins from the body.
Satisfies the Appetite. Foods high in protein makes one feel full faster because they block mu-opioid receptors (which tells the brain to eat more), resulting in a “full feeling” after big meals. Plus, the fiber creates a fullness within the intestines, which can also limit food intake.
Rich in Healthy Omega 9 Oils, which plays an important role in lowering cholesterol levels and promoting healthy inflammation responses. Omega 9 is also linked to improved immune function, reduced insulin resistance and even protection against certain cancers.
Mood Boosting Compounds. Like cacao, Macambo is packed with mood boosting serotonin/melatonin compounds, which also has a tranquilizing effect to prevent insomnia. That blissful buzz that comes from eating high quality dark chocolate stems from the theobromine compound.
Potential Anti-Cancer. No clinical trials have ever been done on the efficacy of Macambo but laboratory testing into its effect on various cancer cells has demonstrated its anti-cancer potential. Testing has been done into its effects on liver cancer and colon cancer with in vitro experiments showing some anti-proliferative potential. It remains to be seen whether Macambo would have the same effects in a clinical trial.

How do you eat them? You can of course eat them just like any other nut or seed as a snack. You can also crush them and sprinkle on top of your morning Superfood bowl and green salads at lunch/dinner or in soups. They also make a tasty alternative to peanuts on top of a sundae.
Macambo nuts/beans are not yet readily available in the United States, Europe, Australia and the rest of the world outside South America. The Amazon Superfoods Company is, however, in a favourable position to market Macambo nuts/beans from the source in the Peruvian Amazon Rainforest where the company is operating. There the 100% natural Macambo nuts/beans are cultivated and harvested in a chemical free and organic environment by independent local and indigenous communities living deep in the jungle.
