Reishi

Reishi/Lingzhi mushrooms (Ganoderma lucidum), also called “The Mushroom of Immortality”, have been a part of some traditional medicine practices in the Far East for more than 2000 years. Reishi are rare mushrooms that grow at the base of deciduous and evergreen trees. They have been introduced to the tropical rainforests of Latin America since the beginning of the 20th century and are now part of the natural plant medicinal chest of the Amazon Rainforest.

Below are three scientifically studied benefits of the Reishi mushroom.

1. Boost the Immune System. One of the most important effects of the Reishi mushroom is that it can boost the immune system. While some details are still uncertain, test-tube studies have shown that Reishi can improve the genes in white blood cells, which are critical parts of the immune system. Research in cancer patients has shown that some of the molecules found in the mushroom can increase the activity of a type of white blood cell called "natural killer cells", which are cells that fight infections and cancer in the body. Although most immune system benefits of Reishi mushroom have been seen in those who are ill, some evidence has shown that it can also help healthy people.

2. Anti-Cancer Properties. Many people consume powder of this fungus due to its potential cancer-fighting properties. In fact, one study of over 4000 breast cancer survivors found that around 59% consumed Reishi mushroom. Additionally, several test-tube studies have shown that it can lead to killing cancer cells. The Reishi mushroom has also been studied for its role in preventing or fighting colorectal cancer. Some research showed that one year of treatment with Reishi decreased the number and size of tumours in the large intestine.

3. Could Fight Fatigue & Depression. Reishi’s effects on the immune system are often most emphasized, but it has other potential advantages as well. These include reduced fatigue and depression, as well as improved quality of life. One study examined its effects in 132 people with neurasthenia, a poorly defined condition associated with aches, pains, dizziness, headaches and irritability. The researchers found that fatigue was reduced and well-being was improved after 8 weeks of taking the supplements. Another study found that fatigue was reduced and quality of life was improved after 4 weeks of taking Reishi powder in a group of 48 breast cancer survivors. What’s more, the people in the study also experienced less anxiety and depression.

The Bottom Line: The Reishi mushroom is a popular fungus used in Eastern medicine. It may boost the immune system through its effects on white blood cells, particularly in people who are ill, such as those with cancer. This fungus may also be able to decrease the size and number of tumours in certain types of cancer as well as improve quality of life for some cancer patients. Most research on humans has shown that it does not improve cholesterol, blood sugar or antioxidants, but it may be effective at reducing fatigue or depression in some cases.

The Reishi powder marketed by the Amazon Superfoods Company is 100% natural as themushrooms are cultivated and harvested in a chemical free and organic environment by independent local and indigenous communities living deep in the Peruvian Amazon Rainforest.

Side effects. The Susan G. Komen Cancer Foundation note that Reishi mushroom extract should not be taken for longer than one month as it may be toxic to the liver. After a break of one month it can be consumed again for another month as so on. Other potential side effects, if taken in large prolonged dosages, include nausea, chronic liver toxicity, dryness in the mouth, throat and nose itchiness.

Dosage. The right dosage of Reishi mushroom extract or powder can vary widely depending on which form of the mushroom a person uses. The recommended dosage is no more than 1 spoonful of powder in 1 liter of boiling water. The liquid is drunk lukewarm 3 times per day for no longer than 1 month. The Reishi powder can also be consumed in Superfoods bowls and smoothies; but only 1 spoonful per day for no longer than 1 month. After a break of 1 month it can be consumed again according to this dosage. Attention: Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not consume these mushrooms.
